After having a brief, but scary carbon monoxide ordeal tonight, I thought it would be appropriate to write about it. A majority of  students here at WVU live in off-campus housing, where most of the houses and apartments are very old. By law, landlords are not required to have carbon monoxide detectors in housing buildings. After tonight, I would strongly advise you to buy one for yourselves. My experience just turned out to be fine, but the anxiety of possibly having been inhaling the deadly gas for hours, was immense.

My apartment building is older than most and I share it with only a few other tenants across from me. The beeping was coming from the basement, where the laundry machines are located. The walls are paper thin, so even 2 levels up, we could hear the incessant beeping. I just figured it was our neighbors alarm, so I ignored it. One of the other tenants apparently went downstairs to check it out, and came back up to warn me that our fire/carbon monoxide alarm was going off. To say the least, I was a little freaked out. We called the fire department and within about 5 to 10 minutes they arrived. Over the phone they told us to close all windows and doors, so they could get an accurate reading. So they we all were, huddled under umbrellas and raincoats with our pets, waiting for them to arrive. The firefighters went into the basement to check it all out. I didn’t follow them because I had my roommates dog with me, so I waited under the deck. After another 15 minutes, we got the A-ok to go back inside. Apparently, the alarm was just about to expire, and that was causing the noise. It was still a scary half hour, even if it turned out to be nothing.

I have gathered some information about carbon monoxide poisoning and its symptoms for you to go over:

Because carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless it is not always evident when it has become a problem is the home. Often people who have a mild to moderate problem will find they feel sick while they spend time at home. They might feel a little better outside in the fresh air but will have re-occurring symptoms shortly after returning home.

Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Low levels of carbon monoxide poisoning can be confused with flu symptoms, food poisoning or other illnesses and can have a long term health risk if left unattended. Some of the symptoms are the following.

  • Shortness of breath
  • Mild nausea
  • Mild headaches

Moderate levels of CO exposure can cause death if the following symptoms persist for a long measure of time.

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Light-headedness

High levels of CO can be fatal causing death within minutes.

Treatment Options
There are immediate measures you can take to help those suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning.

  • Get the victim into fresh air immediately.
  • If you can not get the people out of the house, then open all windows and doors. Any combustion appliances should be turned off.
  • Take those who were subjected to carbon monoxide to a hospital emergency room as quickly as possible. A simple blood test will be able to determine if carbon monoxide poisoning has occurred.

All information grabbed from this carbon monoxide website. The EPA website also has some good information beyond what most websites give you. They give links to studies and articles about CO2 poisoning and links to buy CO2 detectors.

I have heard that the KIDDE CO2 detector is one of the better ones to buy. It’s priced at $24 on Amazon.com, $34 on Lowes.com and $36 on Walmart.com.

Take it from me – you don’t want to go through what I had to go through tonight. Go buy one ASAP, and it could save your life.

Final Exams……….are horrible.

So…most of us will be “entertaining” ourselves this week with our final exams. But, sweet relief isn’t too far away.

Here are ways to make them go a little smoother:

  1. Study Early–Don’t do a 6-hour cram session in the library. Start studying a week before your exam.
  2. Schedule–Create a schedule for yourself, complete with study breaks.
  3. Sleep!!–Don’t forget to sleep, and I mean really sleep.–none of that cramped sleep in those uncomfy library chairs.
  4. Prioritize–Study for your hardest exams first. Make a list. Stay organized.
  5. Ask Questions–Ask your professor questions if you have any missing information in your notes. It really is the key to getting an A.
  6. Attend Any/All Review Sessions–Sometimes professors give out hints at review sessions that they wouldn’t give in regular class.

Click here for a complete schedule of WVU’s Final Exams. The Mountainlair is also open 24 hours during finals week for those who want to study there.  Good luck, everyone!

Silence In Morgantown

This next event is not something that is going to be done in just Morgantown, but all over the nation and I feel it’s worth mentioning in this blog. West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin has asked for a moment of silence across the nation to honor the lives of the 29 miners that were killed in the explosion in the Upper Big Branch mine in Raleigh County. Usually my portion of the blog focuses on the outdoors and recreation, but even if someone is riding on the rail trail or rock climbing, you should stop what you are doing and have a moment of silence at 3:30 pm on Monday afternoon. President Obama also gives his condolences for the families of the miners who have lost a loved one and so should everyone else.

Ask Not.

Monday, April 12th, at 6:00, the WVU office for Social Justice is presenting a screening of, “Ask Not,” a PBS documentary on “don’t ask, don’t tell.” The screening will be in G21 Ming Hsieh Hall.

Don’t ask, don’t tell  is, according to our beloved Wikipedia, “the policy restricting the United States military from efforts to discover or reveal closeted gay, lesbian, and bisexual service members or applicants, while barring those that are openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual from military service.”

Ask Not explores how the policy came to be and how it affects gay and lesbian soldiers and servicemembers. It reveals current and veteran soldiers’ struggle to maintain their “double lives” and how they deal with the law.

A discussion will follow the screening, featuring U.S. Army Sergeant Pepe Noah Johnson, a veteran who was discharged under “don’t ask, don’t tell,”  and Sgt. Johnson, who was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal.

Ask Not has been nominated for Outstanding Documentary at the GLAAD Media Awards. The LA Times calls it, “timely and balanced… a strong, serious effort at mixing a discussion of civil rights and a look at Americans forced to choose between love for their country and love for another human being.”
