Ask Not.

Monday, April 12th, at 6:00, the WVU office for Social Justice is presenting a screening of, “Ask Not,” a PBS documentary on “don’t ask, don’t tell.” The screening will be in G21 Ming Hsieh Hall.

Don’t ask, don’t tell  is, according to our beloved Wikipedia, “the policy restricting the United States military from efforts to discover or reveal closeted gay, lesbian, and bisexual service members or applicants, while barring those that are openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual from military service.”

Ask Not explores how the policy came to be and how it affects gay and lesbian soldiers and servicemembers. It reveals current and veteran soldiers’ struggle to maintain their “double lives” and how they deal with the law.

A discussion will follow the screening, featuring U.S. Army Sergeant Pepe Noah Johnson, a veteran who was discharged under “don’t ask, don’t tell,”  and Sgt. Johnson, who was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal.

Ask Not has been nominated for Outstanding Documentary at the GLAAD Media Awards. The LA Times calls it, “timely and balanced… a strong, serious effort at mixing a discussion of civil rights and a look at Americans forced to choose between love for their country and love for another human being.”

Do we have a soul? What is the value of art? What is intelligence? These are topics the WVU Philosophy Department invites people to think about through “The Question“. Sharon Ryan, chair of the Philosophy Department, and the department of Political Science are hosting the WVU Debate Team to tackle the question, “Does race matter?” The students are given the question beforehand to promote deep thought on the subject.

The debate is on Wednesday, April 14th, at 7:30 in the Mountainlair Ballrooms.

The WVU Debate Team participates in competitions across the country. The team has competed in tournaments at the US Naval Academy, the US Military Academy (West Point), Vanderbilt University, and many others.
